From the Pressroom of National Safe Place (http://www.safeplaceservices.org/pr-040505.html) Senators Craig and Feinstein Co-sponsor Resolution Making March 13-19 National Safe Place Week for Children Nextel Aligns with National Safe Place and Designates Nextel Retail Stores as "Safe Places" WASHINGTON (March 14, 2005) - Senators Larry Craig (Idaho) and Dianne Feinstein (California) have co-sponsored Senate Resolution 71 designating March 13 - 19 as National Safe Place Week. This designation highlights the innovative Safe Place program, which brings businesses and volunteers together to provide help and safety to children and teens facing abuse, neglect or serious family problems. "Project Safe Place is an outstanding program, and I am proud to join my colleague, Senator Dianne Feinstein, in offering this resolution once again," said Senator Larry Craig. "I would also like to thank Nextel Communications for their remarkable generosity, which will increase the visibility and effectiveness of Safe Place in serving the youth of my state and the entire nation." "I am pleased to join Senator Craig to offer this resolution for National Safe Place Week," said Senator Dianne Feinstein. "I commend National Safe Place for the invaluable assistance you have provided to the thousands of young people who have sought out Safe Place locations. I would also like to recognize and thank Nextel, and other national sponsors, for opening their doors to offer more Safe Places to youths in crisis." "During National Safe Place Week, we hope to raise the overall awareness of Safe Place and enlist more businesses as Safe Place partners," said Sandy Bowen, Executive Director of National Safe Place YMCA. The more resources our children and teens have available, the more likely they will find the help they need." Safe Place offers a community collaboration model that provides help and safety to children and teens. Children needing help can go to businesses, community buildings or buses with the Safe Place sign and within minutes be connected with the local youth serving agency that provides supportive services. Safe Place also announced the addition of Nextel Communications Inc. NASDAQ: NXTL as a national sponsor. Nextel, a leader in wireless technology has a strong relationship with public safety officials and organizations across the country. Nextel Senior Vice President and Chief Service Officer, Rick Orchard, a member of the National Safe Place Board of Directors, presented the national program a corporate donation of $75,000. Nextel will also designate most Nextel Retail Stores as "Safe Place" locations this year. The number of Nextel stores serving as Safe Place locations represents the largest single source of retail locations dedicated to the cause. "Nextel is pleased to stand arm and arm today with Safe Place, Senators Craig and Feinstein, and all involved with this great program," Orchard said at the Capitol Hill news conference. "Nextel's 19,000 employees and designated retail stores stand ready to help support Project Safe Place and provide a safe haven for America's treasured youth during challenging times." "Our goal is that every child in America knows what the yellow and black Safe Place sign means. We want to make certain that any youth in crisis can easily get to immediate help and safety. We encourage businesses across the country to help us reach this goal and that is why we are so thrilled to have Nextel join us as a partner," added Bowen. |
